Where there’s a game, there’s trafficking. The Atlanta World Cup games created the perfect trap. Law enforcement agencies achieved a powerful victory against sex trafficking networks during the recent FIFA World Cup games. Homeland Security Investigations partnered with local authorities to execute Operation Red Card across metro Atlanta. This joint initiative successfully rescued 54 human trafficking victims from horrific exploitation. Officials also arrested over 150 individuals involved in trafficking and child exploitation.
Atlanta World Cup: 14 Illegal Immigrants Arrested
The sweep targeted predators taking advantage of massive international crowds gathered in Georgia. Authorities confirmed that none of those arrested were international visitors attending the matches. However, 14 of the individuals taken into custody were in the United States unlawfully. Special Agent Steven Schrank stated that Atlanta will never be a safe haven for predators. He emphasized that these law enforcement efforts represent real lives changed and restored.
Atlanta World Cup: Restoring Hope to the Vulnerable
Georgia Bureau of Investigation Director Chris Hosey highlighted the urgent need to protect the vulnerable. Traffickers often operate in total secret, hiding their heinous acts until severe damage occurs. Thankfully, local service organizations immediately stepped in to offer comprehensive help to rescued victims. Similar successful stings recently took place in Missouri, Tennessee, and New York. Global reports from Future Voices estimate that over 50 million people suffer in modern slavery.
Doing God’s Work
As believers, we are called to stand against evil and protect those in danger. God calls His people to be a voice for those who cannot speak for themselves. The World Messianic Bible urges us to champion justice for the hurting.
“Defend the weak and the fatherless,” Psalm 82:3 instructs. “Do justice to the afflicted and needy. Rescue the weak and needy.”
Psalm 82:3–4, WMB
