Chicago gas prices are the results of the ongoing conflict with the Iran War. At least that’s what they are telling us because this happened last year. With no war.
Regardless, my wife and I were driving around looking for gas in Chicago. This is what I discovered:
Chicago Gas: The Price of the Commute

According to recent data, the average retail price for gas in Chicago has surged to $4.41 per gallon. That is a staggering 18% increase from this time last year.
For many of us, this isn’t just a statistic; it’s the difference between a family outing or staying home.
However, for those who have mastered the art of stewardship, there are “refuges” of relief scattered around the Chicago metro area.
Chicago Gas: Sam’s Club Relief
If you hold a membership, the savings at the pump are currently some of the most dramatic we’ve seen in years. While city stations are flirting with the $4.50 mark, these Sam’s Club locations are offering a significant “member’s discount”:
| Location | Unleaded | Premium | Savings vs. City Avg |
| Cicero (#6328) | $3.98 | $5.09 | -$0.43 |
| Calumet City (#6489) | $3.89 | $5.18 | -$0.52 |
| Des Plaines (#6464) | $4.29 | $5.24 | -$0.12 |
NuCreature Note: If you’re driving a standard 15-gallon tank, a trip to the Cicero or Calumet City pumps could save you nearly $7.00 per fill-up. Over a month of commuting, that’s a utility bill or a few bags of groceries.
Wise as Serpents, Innocent as Doves
In times of economic pressure, it is easy to let anxiety take the wheel. But as we are reminded in the scriptures:
“Pay attention! I am sending you out like sheep among wolves, so be as prudent as snakes and as harmless as doves.” (Mattityahu (Mat) 10:16, CJB)
Being “prudent as snakes” in today’s economy means being sharp, informed, and strategic with the resources we’ve been given.
Three Ways to Win at the Pump This Week
- Time Your Trip: The lines at the Cicero location are legendary for a reason. Try to refuel mid-week, ideally before 8:00 AM or after 7:00 PM, to avoid the rush.
- Leverage the Tech: Use the Sam’s Club app to check live prices before you leave your driveway. In this volatile market, prices can shift while you’re sitting in traffic on the Ike.
- Check Your Tires: It sounds minor, but properly inflated tires can improve your gas mileage by up to 3%. When prices are this high, every extra mile is a victory.
Chicago is a resilient city, and we’ve weathered storms before. By staying informed and making small, strategic choices, we can navigate these rising costs with our budgets—and our spirits—intact.
