The Israeli authorities have reported a death toll of at least 1,200, with another 2,900 injured, following an unprecedented attack by Hamas from air, land, and sea on Saturday.
Hamas launched thousands of rockets towards Israel, with an estimated 1,000 militants infiltrating the country from the adjacent Gaza Strip. Israeli officials have confirmed that at least 100 civilians and soldiers have been captured.
In response, the Israel Defense Forces have declared a “war alert” and initiated counter-airstrikes on Gaza, a 140-square-mile region home to 2 million Palestinians. This territory has been under a blockade enforced by Israel and Egypt since Hamas took control in 2007. Palestinian authorities have reported at least 1,527 fatalities and another 6,612 injuries in Gaza since Saturday. Unlike Israel, the Gaza Strip lacks air raid sirens or bomb shelters.
