Scripture commands us in 1 Peter 5:8 to “Stay sober, stay alert! Your enemy, the Adversary, stalks about like a roaring lion, looking for someone to swallow up” (CJB). As believers, we cannot afford to let cultural celebration lure us into spiritual slumber. Sporting events present a critical battleground where the Body of Christ must stand as watchmen on the wall, fully aware of how darkness attempts to operate in the shadows of public celebration. The adversary is fundamentally an exploiter. He targets human vulnerability, offering temporary pleasure or an escape from pain, only to lock the exit door once a person steps inside.

• The Trap of Deception: Human traffickers rarely kidnap people in broad daylight; they lure them in with false promises of a better life, a good job, or affection. Similarly, the enemy disguises himself as an angel of light (2 Cor. 11:14). He never shows the hook; he only shows the bait.
• The Burden of Spiritual Debt: Human exploiters use artificial financial debts to keep victims trapped in bondage. Spiritually, the enemy uses the weight of sin and shame to convince people they can never be clean, never go home, and never be free. He acts as the accuser, using our failures to keep us isolated from God.
• Systemic Blindness: Scripture explicitly uses the language of captivity when describing those caught in the enemy’s grip. Sha’ul (Paul) instructs Timothy to gently correct opponents so that “they will wake up and escape from the trap of the Adversary, who has held them captive to do his will” (2 Timothy 2:26, CJB).

To fight this battle effectively, we must look past cinematic stereotypes of physical chains and recognize the psychological and spiritual strongholds used by modern-day oppressors. Traffickers operate through deception, manipulation, and intimidation—tactics that directly mirror the adversary’s nature.

• Extortion and debt bondage: Labor trafficking, beyond sex trafficking, often leads to severe crises. International events like the FIFA World Cup can worsen this issue. Building stadiums and infrastructure often relies on forced labor and predatory debt traps, violating God’s teachings: “Woe to him who builds his house by unrighteousness and his upper rooms by injustice, who makes his neighbor serve him for nothing and does not give him his wages” (Yirmeyahu [Jeremiah] 22:13, CJB).
• The Illusion of Freedom: Victims of sex trafficking are often controlled through the confiscation of their legal identification, threats against their families, and trauma bonds. They may appear free to walk through a hotel lobby or a crowded stadium concourse during the NBA Finals, but they are trapped by invisible walls of fear and coercion.
• The Cloak of Anonymity: High-volume tourism provides a shield of anonymity for buyers and exploiters alike. Scripture warns that the wicked believe their deeds are hidden: “He says in his heart, ‘God has forgotten, he hides his face, he will never see it’” (Tehillim [Psalms] 10:11, CJB).

True discernment requires looking for subtle, behavioral anomalies in hospitality spaces, transit hubs, and public venues:

• Restricted Speech and Autonomy: Pay attention to individuals who are never permitted to speak for themselves, whose travel documents or money are strictly controlled by a companion, or who appear heavily coached and anxious when interacting with others.
• Signs of Subjugation and Disorientation: Look for individuals showing signs of extreme sleep deprivation, physical neglect, or a total lack of awareness regarding their current location, hotel, or surroundings.
• Unhealthy or Controlling Dynamics: Be alert to severe age discrepancies where an older individual displays absolute control over a minor or young adult, managing their movements, communication, and clothing, devoid of any genuine familial care.

Our assignment to seek justice and defend the oppressed does not conclude when the championship trophy is hoisted or the stadium lights go dark. The FIFA World Cup and the NBA Finals simply magnify a systemic, multi-billion dollar illicit industry that operates 365 days a year in our cities and neighborhoods. Trafficking thrives where vulnerability exists—feeding on homelessness, broken families, and economic desperation.

The Church is called to be a permanent sanctuary and a disruptive force against wickedness. By cultivating a lifestyle of sobriety, training our ministries to recognize exploitation, and supporting local counter-trafficking efforts, we transform temporary awareness into lasting Kingdom impact.
