Does the Bible say anything about becoming vegan or vegetarian? Did you know that before the fall of man we were on a plant based diet, but after the fall of man we need protein from animal fat in order to have proper nourishment? Did you know the Bible warned that in the last days there would be a movement of abstaining from meat?
The Rise of Veganism
According to vegansociety.com, veganism is a philosophy and way of living that seeks to exclude – as far as possible – all forms of animal products and bi-product for food. Veganism has its roots in pagan history and the concept was first mentioned in 500B CE by the philosopher Pythagoras of Samos. The term veganism was later coined in 1944 and became popular in mainstream culture in the late 2010s. The rise of veganism though seemingly harmless is the antithesis of the commandment of God.
What The Bible Says About Eating Meat
In the bible, God declares “Everything that lives and moves about will be food for you” (Genesis 9:3). In 1 Timothy 4:4 God says, “Every creature of God is good, and nothing is to be refused, if received with thanksgiving for it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.” This shows that it has always been God’s intention for us to eat meat
With the rise of veganism, there has been a rise of false convictions and false morality around eating meat. It is now prohibited in certain churches and veganism has become the new order of the day, with some pastors going as far as declaring that eating meat blocks our connection to God. This is of course not true. First of all, the notion that any kind of meat can defile us has been done away with by Jesus in the New Testament when he said in Mark 7:15 “there is nothing outside a person that by going into him can defile him, but the things that come out of a person are what defile him.”
Veganism has turned this scripture on its head by implying that if you consume meat, you are in some way sinning against your body and even sinning against God. What makes veganism insidious to the modern-day Christian is its increasing popularity in the modern church where pastors a spewing a new doctrine that has never been seen before or heard of in the bible.
Veganism: A Sign of The End Times?
The rise of veganism is no accident. It is one of the many signs that we are living in the end times. In 1 Timothy 4:1, the bible mentions that seducing spirits and the doctrines of devils that in the end times that cause many to depart from the faith. It goes on to say that these seducing spirits would forbid marriage and require abstinence from foods which God created to be eaten with thanksgiving by those who have come to trust and to know the truth.
…For everything created by God is good, and nothing received with thanksgiving needs to be rejected, because the word of God and prayer make it holy.
1 Timothy 4:1 CJB
Christians should be wary of this new doctrine. This idea that excessive restrictions and discipline are somehow profitable or beneficial is untrue. This can be seen in 1 Timothy 4:8 where Paul warns against this by telling us that bodily exercise (or discipline in this case) profiteth little; but practicing godliness is what is important.
The crux of my appeal to Christians is that salvation does not lie in veganism and abstaining from meat and animal byproducts. Salvation only comes from Christ and him alone. For Christians, leaning heavily into veganism is not just a doctrinal error but is a dangerous cavorting with the enemy of our souls who would do anything to bend and twist the word of God.
My appeal to you is this, be wary of becoming vegan and anything that takes your eyes away from the saving power of grace.
