Ezekiel commentary Chapters 38 and 39
Background Information: Ezekiel was a Jewish priest and prophet who was taken captive by King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon during his second invasion of Jerusalem in 597 B.C. The Lord commissioned Ezekiel as the prophet to the Jews in exile. He began prophesying to them when he was 30 years old. In Chapters 38 and 39 the Lord tells Ezekiel to speak to the leader of Russia concerning Israel and the Battle of Armageddon set aside for the End Time, referred to as the latter years.
These two chapters are distinctly different from Daniel and Revelation as the Lord is speaking directly to the leader of Russia (Gog), and further clarity is provided about earthly happenings going on in Israel once the Battle of Armageddon is over. The Lord also tells us why He will allow the bloodiest, deadliest war in the history of planet earth.
Ezekiel Chapter 38
Synopsis of verses 1-15: The Lord tells Ezekiel that He will bring Russia (Magog) against His people Israel during the End Time, which is now (verses 1-9, 14-16). In verse five, the Lord pinpoints the nations that will accompany Russia: Persia (Iran), Ethiopia, Libya, Gomer (Eastern Europe) and Togarmah (Turkey). Please know God is speaking through Ezekiel to Gog (the leader of Russia) and Magog (the nation of Russia).
Please take note of verse 8: “After many days thou (Russia) shalt be visited: in the latter years thou (Russia) shalt come into the land (Israel) that is brought back from the sword, and is gathered out of many people . . . and they shall dwell safely all of them.” Russia will come against Israel in the End Time when millions of them will have returned home from living as immigrants from all over the world.
Verse 11: “And thou shalt say, I will go up to the land of unwalled villages; I will go to them that are at rest, that dwell safely, all of them dwelling without walls, and having neither bars nor gates.” Russia, the lead country in the Battle of Armageddon, will wage war against Israel while they are at peace with their surrounding countries. A counterfeit peace will temporarily come when the Middle East peace agreement between Israel and Palestine is confirmed and officiated by the Leader of the One World Government, the Anti-Christ. The inauguration of the treaty will mark the beginning of the Tribulation Period (Please see Daniel 9:27).
Synopsis of verses 16-23: God will prove to all nations (especially the Jews because most of them rejected Jesus Christ as their Messiah), that there is no other Lord and Savior when He physically shows up to end the Battle of Armageddon.
Please take note of verse 16: “And thou shalt come against my people of Israel, as a cloud to cover the land; it shall be in the latter days, and I will bring thee against my land, that the heathen may know me, when I shall be sanctified in thee, O Gog, before their eyes.” The Lord will use the vain and evil intentions of Russia as a global stage by which He will glorify Himself. The Lord Jesus Christ will be glorified among all nations that have rejected Him as Savior and Lord and persecuted His people, Israel.
Verse 20: “So that the fishes of the sea, and the fowls of the heaven, and the beasts of the field, and all creeping things that creep upon the earth, and all the men that are upon the face of the earth, shall shake at my presence, and the mountains shall be thrown down . . . and every wall shall fall to the ground.” The Lord will open up the earth through a powerful earthquake and swallow up thousands of the Russian alliance.
Verse 21: “And I will call for a sword against him throughout all my mountains, saith the Lord God: every man’s sword shall be against his brother.” The Lord will will cause the men of the Russian alliance to turn on each other. Please read Revelation 19:15 – “And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.”
Verses 22-23: Beside the sword of His mouth, the Lord will call for rain, hailstones, and fire to come down to devour the Russian alliance. In other words, the Lord is going to stone them to death, and everyone will know that He is God, and there is no other!
Ezekiel Chapter 39
Synopsis of verses 1-21 details the Russian militia regrouping and attempting to attack Israel the second time. Please understand that this second invasion of Russia includes all of the armies of the world for the Battle of Armageddon, as this chapter coincides with Revelation 16:10-16 and Chapter 19, as well as Daniel 11:40-44.
Please note verses 2-5: “And I will turn thee back, and leave but the sixth part of thee.” Russia will wage two invasions against Israel. During their first invasion, which will occur in the middle of the 7-year Tribulation Period, the Russian alliance will be defeated by God Himself, Yahweh, leaving 1/6 of them alive. Upon their second and last invasion of Israel, which will include the Kings of the East (namely China, also North and South Korea, Japan, India, Iraq, and other countries east of the Euphrates River) recorded in Revelation 16:12, they will be defeated by Jesus Christ as He descends from Heaven to end the Battle of Armageddon, and all of creation will tremble at his appearance!
Please understand Russia’s 2nd invasion of Israel occurs simultaneously with the events recorded in Revelation 16:12-16. Revelation 16:14 says, “For they are the spirits of devils, working miracles, which go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty.” Verse 16 reads, “And he ( The Lord) gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon.”
Please reference Revelation 19:11, “And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war.” Revelation 19:15 reads, “And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.”
Note: Although The Anti-Christ/Leader of the One World Government is not mentioned in these two chapters, he is ruling the nations during the time of Russia’s invasions of Israel. When the Lord Jesus Christ descends from Heaven to destroy the Russian alliance during their second conquest of Israel, the Anti-Christ and his alliance will also be destroyed in the Battle of Armageddon. Daniel 11:40 and 44 records the two invasions. Also refer to Joel 3:2 and Zechariah 14:1-4.
Verse 9: “And they that dwell in the cities of Israel shall go forth, and shall set on fire and burn the weapons . . . and they shall burn them with fire seven years.” After Armageddon, the Jews will be burning the enemy armies’ weapons for seven years.
Verses 11-12: “And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will give unto Gog (the leader of Russia) a place there of graves in Israel, the valley of the passengers on the east of the sea . . and there shall they bury Gog and all his multitude: and they shall call it The valley of Hamon-gog.
(Vs12) And seven months shall the house of Israel be burying of them, that they may cleanse the land.” The Jews will be burying the bodies of the armies for seven months.
The remainder of Chapter 39 through 46 coincide with Revelation Chapters 21-22 on the New Jerusalem (The Holy City) and eternal life with Christ.
